Richmond Wedding Vendor Spotlight
From Richmond Weddings:
We are so excited to introduce you all to Tommy and Mairi, the owners of MaiTy Dance! These two always impress us with their moves, and they can teach them to you!
Tell us a little about your company!
My name is Tommy, and I am recently married and very happy! My wife, Mairi, and I have an Alaskan Klee Kai named Samba. She is currently in training to become a therapy dog and would love to meet you!
My wife and I have also just launched our dance company, MaiTy Dance. We are a Ballroom, Latin, and Social Dance studio providing custom dance lessons, choreography, and fitness. We have been dancing and teaching professionally our whole lives and have experienced the treasures that dance can provide first hand.
How did you get started in this business?
Our enduring fondness for ballroom dancing led to a total transition from ballet to ballroom as we followed our passion for dancing as art rather than sport.
In Charlotte, North Carolina, we trained and danced together professionally in Ballroom and Latin dance before moving to Richmond to be closer to family and begin a new chapter in our dance careers. Newly married and wanting to pass on our knowledge and love of dance, we established our own dance company in Richmond, taking the affectionate nickname given to us by previous students, Team MaiTy, to create MaiTy Dance.
MaiTy Dance has continued to grow, offering custom dance lessons from fitness to tango across the Richmond area. We guide students of all abilities to their personal dancing goals, likening our teaching style to a couture wardrobe: tailored to suit the customer.
What’s your favorite wedding story?
Being that our services are provided before the wedding our favorite wedding stories lie in the process of preparing for the big day. Many times, our couples or family members come seeking a dance for the wedding whether it’s father- daughter, mother- son, or a bride and groom dance, and this is the only time they get to spend just enjoying each other. We have seen couples come in tense and stressed and leave feeling reconnected with each other.
I would say my favorite wedding story is the story that happens time and time again: the story of the couple coming to us just trying to check another thing off of their wedding to-do list and leaving with a stronger connection with their fiancé. It’s a great way to start a marriage!
Why do you like working with weddings?
Contributing to one of the most important days of a person’s life is truly something to be grateful for. We cherish being a part of that process, getting to know our students and helping their wedding dreams come true in any way we can.
From a vendor’s perspective, what is the one best piece of advice you can offer to engaged couples?
Remember why you are getting married in the first place.
How far in advance should couples book your services?
You can start your lessons three months to two years in advance! It all depends on your goals.
What inspired you the most / where do you find inspiration?
We find inspiration in each other, our family & friends, life experiences, all forms of dance, different cultures, art, and music.
What do you like to do when you are away from work?
We enjoy dancing with each other, spending time with our dog, Samba, drinking a nice glass of wine or a cold beer, learning new skills, and trying new things.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
We love to relax by watching reality TV :)
